| This skier started skiing in 1981 with
his club and within his first year became very active in club
activities. The one activity that got the most attention was racing.
Beginning in 1985, he served as Race Director for his club for several
years. During he tenure he was heavily involved with club and league
statistics. He also spent many hours to help revise the race rules for
Rokka League. His greatest
contribution was in helping form the newly created Far West Racing
Association. Without his "behind the scenes" assistance, the FWRA would
not have had the success it has had. In 1985, he became Chief Financial
Officer of the Far West Racing Association. Except for the first two
years, he is the only CFO FWRA has ever had. In this position, he
is responsible for maintaining our tax status, keeping our books in
balance, but above all, he administers $15,000 - $20,000 (cash) for the
FWRA operations of FWRA.
From 1984 until 1992 he served as
Security Manager for L.A. Ski Swap, from which proceeds went to help
offset league racing expenses. Some of his biggest contributions are not
only from the offices he has held, but the many hours of "behind the
scenes" assistance. His unselfish assistance has been prevalent at past
L.A. Council Championships; the FWRA Club Challenge and for all of the
FWRA Championships since 1985. Whatever is needed to be don' seeding,
posting, scoring, starter assistance, or computer operations; he can be
called upon. This skier/racer has sacrificed many "on the hill" ski days
to ensure that races come off, on time, and with minimal problems, if
any.
Even though most of his ski time is spent
on non-skiing activities, he still finds enough time to enjoy skiing and
occasionally participates in the races. He has received many honors over
the years from his club and league. The time has come to honor Marty
Purmort as the 1999 Terry Smith recipient. |
